Two mothers from opposite sides of the civil war in Sri Lanka embark upon a joint campaign to find the truth about their sons who had gone missing like hundreds of others. They have only one thing in common: a kind of love that only a mother would understand.

Amila, a 19-year-old orphan from rural Sri Lanka, moves to Colombo to support his four younger siblings, including a sister needing urgent heart surgery. The cost is far beyond his earnings as a construction worker. Desperate, he accepts work from Malini, a woman running a child trafficking operation. While the job provides quick money, he becomes increasingly troubled by its moral cost. As his empathy for the victims grows, Amila confronts the consequences of his choices.

Burning Birds

Set in 1980s Sri Lanka during a period of political violence, Burning Birds follows Kusum, a young mother of eight, whose husband is murdered by pro-government paramilitary forces. Left impoverished and socially ostracized in her rural village, she struggles to survive and protect her children. As desperation grows, Kusum faces exploitation, abuse, and moral compromise in her fight to keep her family alive. Her journey becomes a harrowing portrait of resilience and the human cost of Marxists uprising.

Flying Fish

Set against the backdrop of the Sri Lankan Civil War, the narrative interweaves three interconnected stories of love, loss, and survival. In “Wasana and Soldier,” a Sinhalese village woman falls in love with an army soldier, becomes pregnant, and is forced to flee the village. “Son and Mother” follows a widowed Sinhala woman struggling to raise eight children in poverty, whose illicit affair is exposed, prompting her eldest son, consumed by rage and shame, to stab her. In “Tamil Girl,” a Tamil schoolgirl suffers humiliation at an army checkpoint and becomes trapped with LTTE extortion that conflict ultimately erupts in violence against her family.

Filmography

Sanjeewa Pushpakumara born on 05th May 1977 in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2005.

Flying Fish (2011)

Flying Fish (Sinhala: Igillena Maluwo) is a 2011 anthology film directed by Sri Lankan filmmaker Sanjeewa Pushpakumara. It was produced with the financial support of the Hubert Bals Fund of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).The film made its world premiere on January 28, 2011, as part of the Rotterdam festival’s Tiger Awards Competition.

Wasana and Soldier

A young Sinhalese village woman falls in love with an army soldier and becomes pregnant. The couple attempts to abort the child but fails. While they are making love in the ruins of an abandoned building, her father sees them. While he does not confront her about what he has seen, the scene haunts him continuously.

Tamil Girl

A Tamil schoolgirl experiences her first menstrual period while in a bus on her way home after school. This is revealed when an army soldier subjects her to a security check at an army-controlled roadblock. Her father is a clerk and her mother is a housewife; they live in a rural village in Eastern Sri Lanka, where the war between the state army and the L.T.T.E. has been intensifying.

Asu

Asu is a 2021 Sri Lankan Sinhala-language drama film produced, written and directed by Sanjeewa Pushpakumara. The film stars Udari Warnakulasooriya, Shyam Fernando and Dinara Punchihewa in the main lead roles.
